There have been some changes going on at Quinnco Photography lately and we have finally integrated our blog into our site. Yes, I know, I should have done it long ago. Anyway, this will likely be the final post on this blog here, however the posts from this blog have been moved over to the new blog as well so when you check out the new spaces, don't be surprised to see many of the posts on the new blog as well. We want to keep a little bit of continuity you know!

We have also set up an RSS feed box on the right hand sidebar in case you want to see a few topics that we have started. The new blog has RSS feed subscription built right in, you will see the familiar orange icon prominently displayed. Thanks to those who emailed us that it was time that we did that as well.

Just a quick shout out to Andrew and some of the other local Boy Scouts for their work at Infant Savior Church. Andrew is going for his Eagle Scout project and it involves removing and replacing a bunch of dilapidated fencing near the church's pre-school. Thanks a bunch Andrew and good luck on your project and we'll be checking back in on you!

What a great weekend! The leaves have turned and are starting to drop but we still had enough time for one last drive through the countryside to enjoy them. Laura and I stopped at the famous Roscoe Diner and enjoyed a piece of pie and then took in the sights. As I have said before, this time of year in NY is really special with all the colors and the crisp air.

This is a busy week with the Photo Expo in NYC. It's always a good time and it's a bit like a candy store for photographers. New gear and goodies!

What do photographers do on their day off?

It's obvious of course! They go looking for things to take pictures of! And that is exactly what I did today. This time of year is just incredible with the leaves changing and the cool temperatures, I just love it! And so when I was asked to get out of the office for a few hours and just go do some shooting for the fun of it, I jumped at the chance. I joined two other local photographers and we headed up into Sullivan County and spent the better part of the day trying to find some of the covered bridges that still remain there. And after a little bit of confusion and a few U-turns, we found three.

Here are a few shots from today. It was a lot of fun and I look forward to the next day off!

Ouch!!

Well it was just a matter of time. There are so many deer running around this area that it was bound to happen. Last night while returning home from dinner a deer jumped out in front of the car and there was just no where to go. Luckily I was going fairly slow so no one (and no animals) were more than shaken up. The deer bounded on his way and I was able to limp the car the 1/4 mile to the house.

Now comes the fun part of the deductible and the rental car and the claim and the fixing, etc. To be fair though, USAA has been great so far and if the rest of the process goes as smoothly as the claim part the car will be back on the road in no time.

Be careful out there folks!

What a great weekend it was in Mystic, CT as I was given the honor to photograph the wedding of Kim and Geoff Morneau. From the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club lobster party on the eve of the wedding to the fantastic ceremony at the Inn at Mystic, it couldn't have been more wonderful. And Kim looked simply beautiful as she made her way down the aisle to her lovely outdoor ceremony.

Kim and Geoff, warm wishes for a long and happy life together!

Hi folks, it's been a while since I updated you on my magazine work. As I mentioned a while back I am one of the photographers that works with Orange Magazine. If you haven't seen it you should check it out. There is a list of where you can get it on the Orange Magazine web site.

I was fortunate enough to have one of my images featured on the cover of the current edition. It was part of a story we had done about motorcycling in the Orange County area. We had a blast shooting the story and as a motorcycle rider myself, it was even more fun.

The magazine is primarily about Orange County and the people who live here. There is also a place where you can nominate yourself or a friend as part of the "I Am Orange County" feature that the magazine does every issue. That is always one of the best parts of the magazine for me because you get to see a wonderful range of people who make this area what it is.

And right now they have a recipe contest going on so if you have a special recipe you want to share, send it in!

I really feel bad for my friend. She had some problems with her water system and we have had to dig up the well line that runs from her house to the well. It has not been a good couple of days for her. Between getting the machinery and locating someone to operate it (me) and then repairing the cracked pipe it has been quite a juggling act. Hopefully this will be the last hole we have to put in her yard......

Yes, I know this has nothing to to with photography but sometimes you just want to put pictures of toys on your blog.

A little something different!

It had been a while since I had shot any sports so after years of passing by Twin Lakes Water Ski Park in Monroe I decided to pull in and see what the club was about and see if I could talk them into letting me do some shooting sometime. Well these guys and gals were great! After introducing myself and trying to do my best to assure them I wouldn't get in their way while they were out skiing they agreed to let me spend some time shooting with them.

So I headed down there this morning and although I was getting there before 9:00a these guys were already out there making passes. These folks are serious! And that is no small understatement. As I write this one of the members, Zack, is headed to Florida for a national competition and the club also has several members who are at the top of their competitive divisions. Certainly not the water skiing I was used to!

Anyway, like I said, they were a a great bunch today and I really appreciated everyone putting up with me tagging along. I had a great time and it felt good to shoot some sports again. A big 'Thanks!' to John, Adam, Bruce, Danni, Brad, Zack, JJ and everyone else at Twin Lakes!

There are things that I always associate with the 4th, fireworks of course, but other things like grilling on the deck and ice cream. And although the ice cream melted before I could get a shot, here's one from the grill!

Goodbye....

I just wanted to say goodbye to my friends over at Berry Sweet Buns (BSB). For the folks who have been following this blog they have heard me mention them more than once. BSB was a nice little coffee shop where one could sit and enjoy a cup of coffee, surf the Internet, chat with friends or clients with out the booming music that is found in so many other places. Goodbye because BSB has closed their doors. Another local business that just couldn’t survive in today’s economy. Rob, Marie and the gang, sorry to see you go. And it’s not just them, look at the news and see that Starbucks is getting ready to shutter about 600 stores!

To my point. The people that run local businesses are the ones you live around and see everyday. Like many small businesses a majority of my clients come from my community and those around me. Whenever possible I try to do as much business with them as I can. Not only because I hope that those folks will reciprocate and think of me when they need photography services, but also because in these times of $4.00 plus gasoline, a trip to another merchant may end up costing you more than you would be saving on the product that that second retailer may be selling slightly cheaper. Think local first whenever possible.

Ok.. Now, on a slightly happier note, my horse looked good today! Ok, so he needs a whisker trim, but still…

Summertime Fun!

The summer is here in full force. Although the daytime can be a bit warm, when it cools down in the early evening things are just about perfect for a motorcycle ride. As a former Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor I am reminded about how easy it is to not see one of these motorcycle in the glare of a setting sun or just around dusk. Please be careful both when operating your motorcycles, or as an automobile driver take a little extra care as more of these bikes start appearing with the great summer weather and great riding the Hudson Valley is known for.

And if you haven't looked into one of the great riding programs that the Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers, you should. They have programs for both experienced riders and people who are looking to begin riding. They are well worth the time and expense and can go a long way to making riding much more enjoyable.

Ok, I wanted to go into the city for a equipment demonstration that was being held this morning so I had a few options. Drive in early. I hate this one. That means an early wake-up and traffic, and parking...Ugh!

Next option, the train. Again, another early wake up because it's a two hour ride plus all the train schedule hassle.

And then my personal favorite. Go in the night before, see friends and make a fun trip of it! Sure this one is a bit more expensive but it's a great excuse to make your friends hop the subway to Times Square (the locals never go there unless they have to) and have some fun.

Now I try to be as frugal as the next person so I keep track of frequent flier miles and use cards that give me rewards points and so on. Well last night I got a huge payoff! For some reason which is unknown and will likely never ever happen again, the W Hotel saw fit to not only give me a room for my points, but that room was one of their suites! Sure it was extra points, but who the heck cares?! I mean really, a swanky corner room overlooking Times Square on points! That's unheard of! Anyway, it was really fun to be able to hook up with an old friend, grab some dinner and then retire to the sitting room and chat as we looked down on the lights of the city from the 52nd floor. Anyway, here are a couple of camera phone snapshots from the room. Between the glass and the one inch window opening (no jumpers please) I did what I could...

I wanted to say a big "Thank You!" to Kim and Geoff for selecting me to photograph their wedding. And since we all happened to be down in New Orleans and since it is such a great city, I just had to steal a some of their time and get some quick pictures of them. We had a great time and Geoff kept us all laughing. Maybe he'll let me post a few of those pictures! You two were a blast! I can hardly wait for the wedding, it is really going to be a lot of fun. I just returned from a great trip to New Orleans. It had been a while since I had visited and this trip gave me a bit more time to wander around the city and enjoy many of the things it has to offer. One of the city's best treasures is the music. I just love walking around and hearing all the different types of music and seeing the interesting characters out there performing. On this trip I particularly enjoyed listening to the G String Orchestra. I know, quite a name, but excellent musicians nonetheless. Their line-up included, among others, fiddles, an accordion, a piano, and a string bass. They were a blast and even had a couple of folks out demonstrating some cool cajun dance moves. I made a quick slide show of some images from the trip and G String Orchestra graciously allowed me to use their music as accompaniment. Thanks guys and gals!!! You'll be able to pick them out, they are the ones with the accordion...

Is spring really here?!

Another weekend of semi decent weather has really been nice. Sure, there was a horrendous storm around 4:00 am on Saturday and my dog jumped on my head to let me know but other than that it was pretty nice.

It was a nice weekend and I had to head down to West Point with several prints that have been selected for exhibition at a show at Eisenhower Hall on West Point. If you get a chance, please come by and take a look. Click on the picture below for more information.

It had been a while since I had been to West Point and I had forgotten about the traffic getting in an out of there. To top it off there was also an Army - Navy lacrosse match and a post wide yard sale. Needless to say it was a bit crazy and the traffic lines were long but seeing West Point is really special and the chance to exhibit there is a great opportunity. It is one beautiful and historic place....

Today I kind of kicked back and tried to catch up on some errands I had promised to friends. I was able to catch up with most of them and still have a bit of time to enjoy myself. As I write this I am putting the finishing touches on a presentation I have to give tomorrow night (did I mention I am a procrastinator) for a group of photographers.

I want to leave you with a photo I snapped today. It's nothing special really, but it is one of those kind of shots that makes me forget about all the little things that I tend to want to complain about. I had taken a break and stepped outside onto the back deck and saw my dog Bentley doing what Border Collies do best, trying to impose their will on something. In this case it was my horses, Fathom and Bucky. Well Bentley sat there a while and if it weren't for him knowing that he'd be in trouble he would have headed over and rounded them up. As it was he had to be content just trying to stare them down....

A day in the city...

For those of you that aren't in the Hudson Valley perhaps you don't know but lately it seems to rain here about every 27 1/2 hours. I don't know what is going on but you can bet somewhere in a forecast is rain. So today when I woke up I was expecting to see the rain on the windows as forecast. But, guess what? The weatherman was wrong! I know, tough to believe but it's true. Sure it was gray out, but no rain so the day didn't look like it would be a total bust.

Well, after some initial thoughts of cleaning up my desk, hitting the gym and stuff like that I decided to ignore all that stuff and head to NYC for the day. I mean really, the piles of papers on my desk will still be there when I get back. So I grabbed the little point and shoot and hit the road!

I headed down to the city and the day turned out to be gorgeous! I took in the Metropolitan Museum of Art along with O'Flaherty's Pub, Central Park, Dean & DeLuca's, and a myriad of little shops and stuff. Here's me enjoying a D&D red velvet cupcake...

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (not to be confused with the MoMA) was incredible. As a photographer it is so interesting to me to go and see how these incredible painters did their work. Seeing how they painted the lighting into their works is simply amazing! And those 15 foot tall ones...talk about an enlargement! Seriously, if you haven't been it is certainly worth a trip.

New York is such a unique city. There is just so much going on that you can spend hours just watching it all happen. If you aren't from the area, you need to come visit! And if you do, drop me a line!

It's been some time....

Wow, time has really flown by and I realized just how long it has been since I sat down and updated things here. So much for that New Year's resolution huh?

Anyway, let me take a few minutes and catch up a bit. Since I last updated I have been quite busy. I spent a few days out in wonderful Newport, Rhode Island at the Professional Photographers Association of Rhode Island annual convention. I ventured out there to catch up with a couple of friends who were speaking at the convention and I ended up meeting so many wonderful new friends. And the scenery there, absolutely gorgeous! I had my friend Cody take a quick snap of me as we explored the coastline.

After leaving Rhode Island I returned home to get back to work with on the project that I had been a bit cryptic about. I have been presented with the wonderful opportunity to work with a new magazine in the region. It's called Orange Magazine and it is just fantastic! It is a magazine that highlights the many wonderful people and places and things to do here in Orange County. Check out the website to find out where you can get your copy.

I'm also going to be making a few changes to the logo and some other things. I'm working with a great group of folks at AJ Ross Creative Media to help me get things headed in the right direction. A big thanks to Allan (pictured) and his team for everything. I am really looking forward to seeing these ideas take shape.

Sweet tooth?

Just another quick little update and this one is going to be a bit cryptic...

So today I went to one of favorite little places again, Berry Sweet Buns, where I met up with a couple of wonderful people and enjoyed some coffee and great conversation. These two people are part of a team that has put together something new and exciting that showcases life here in my little corner of New York. It is something that is going to reach out and let folks know just how unique and interesting things are here! And, there is the possibility that I may get a chance to be a part of it! Cryptic enough for you? I really can't say anything more right now except that I left the meeting with a little extra spring in my step....

Oh yeah, I also left with a few of these chocolate covered strawberry gems!

Well after 24+ hours of snow it was time to clean up. I know that the folks here in New York are used to this, but I thought I'd post a quick video of me doing some clean up from last night's storm for those that are snow challenged. It's nothing special but it also gives me a chance to try posting a video here. Heck, why not?

Anyway without further ado...

Thanks to Brian over at Formula H in Middletown. He told me when I bought the Honda tractor that I would love it, and I do. It takes about 15 minutes for me to clean the snow and when summer comes again it will cover all my lawn and pasture needs too! Thanks Brian!

Local Flavor

Those of you who know me well know that I try to do as much business locally as possible. After all, it just makes sense to support the people that you are hoping will support you. Most wedding and portrait photographers rely on word of mouth and local clients for a majority of their business. Because of that I make it a habit to check out my local options before going elsewhere. Now a lot of folks will cite things like a slightly higher cost as compared to a big chain or online merchant but in most cases your local retailers can offer you personalized service that those big folks can't match and good service is something we all want. Such is the case of a cool new little coffee shop near me. Berry Sweet Buns opened a while back and I mentioned them before I headed to Florida. Well they are fast becoming a little hangout for me. Great coffee, fresh and tasty locally made treats and a cozy atmosphere with free wi-fi add up to a place a photographer, or anyone else for that matter, can really enjoy. Try matching that at your big chain coffee house.

Anyway, from time to time I think I will try to highlight some of the places and great people around that help make this area what it is. Heck, then I'll get to feel a little like Alton Brown and the guys from the food network (albeit on a bit smaller scale...) who get paid to cruise around and eat and stuff. Not a bad gig if you can get it!

Sun and Fun in Florida

Ok, time to do some catching up. As I was heading out the door to Florida I told you about some prints I was submitting for judging. Well, I was fortunate enough to have 7 of my 9 submissions approved for the show this spring at West Point! I am very excited to say the least. I will pass along more information as the event draws near and I certainly hope that anyone in the area will come down and take a look at my work and that of some of the other local artists.

Now onto Florida... I always seem to escape just when the coldest weather hits. I can't say that I didn't enjoy the 80 degree weather and bright sunshine. Sorry you guys back in NY were getting some of the coldest days this year.

The convention was great! They had an awesome line up of speakers, some of the biggest and freshest names in wedding photography as well as some of the most experienced portrait photographers around. Not only were the techniques fantastic, but hearing the speakers discuss the philosophy surrounding their success was inspiring. They spoke of bonds built with clients and how relationships with clients can go far beyond the wedding day. It is exactly that type of relationship that we here are looking to build with you. Heading to Florida!

Hey there folks, just a quick little update to keep things rolling along before I get packed up for a trip to Florida. This is another small convention with several fantastic workshops. Those of you who have been following this blog know that I enjoy keeping up with the latest industry trends and techniques. These help to keep things fresh and allow me to expand my knowledge and 'toolbox' so that I have more options available to help make even better images for you, my clients.

Before I head out though I want to say that it has been an exciting few weeks lately. I have met some great new people and have also found another cool little place to hang out from time to time. I enjoy a good hazelnut mocha every now and again and there is this little coffee shop that opened recently by me that I kept thinking that I needed to visit. Well I did stop in the other day and man am I glad I did! It is such a neat little place, very cozy, great coffee and good food. And for folks like me who use the internet daily, they have wifi available! Talk about a trifecta! Well, while I was there enjoying my coffee and meeting with a friend I learned about this local photography student who is interested in possibly doing some assisting with me. I mean really, can it get any better? Since moving from Texas I had been hoping to find someone just like this and the next thing you know, there she is! Anyway, I look forward to getting a chance to work with Megan soon! And if you are looking for a nice relaxing mocha, I recommend swinging by Berry Sweet Buns off of 302 in Circleville.

What a way to kick off the 2008 weddings!

Congratulations and best wishes Lindsey and Adam!

This past weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to assist in the photography of a very special wedding. And while all weddings are special in their own way, this one was even more so. The bride, Lindsey Fuhrman, was a heart donor recipient and on Saturday she fulfilled what was once a dream, to be married. On a snowy afternoon in Erie she realized that dream when she married Adam in a ceremony filled with tears.

I first heard about Lindsey's story while attending one of the many educational seminars I try to attend. It was at one of these seminars where I heard Mike Fulton of TriCoast Photography tell us about her story. When he mentioned that he would be coming to Erie, PA in February I explained that if he needed anything I would enjoy being a part of this wonderful story. Besides, it snows in Eries and Mike is from Houston so I figured if nothing else, I could drive. And snow it did! I think we ended up with about 8-10 inches for the day! And yes, I did some driving....

But back to the wedding. It was a beautiful ceremony with more tears than one can imagine. Not only were Lindsey and Adam's parents there, but Lindsey's donor's parents were there as well and they were an important part of the day. Had it not been for the selflessness of them and their daughter Samantha this special day may never have come.

Trying to work that resolution...

Alright! It hasn't been weeks (or more) since the last post. I'm doing my best to keep my resolution to keep the blog updated. Also, unless you directly bookmark the blog you have probably noticed something new on your way into the blog. After too long a time I finished getting the website revamped and got it online. Take a look around and please let me know what you think. If you like it, let me know and even if there are things you aren't wild about, please let me know that as well. And if you see a horrible typo...well you just need to put a high priority on that email!

Now, in the cute puppy department we have Gunner. Gunner is a 14 week old German Shorthaired Pointer owned by a friend I used to work with. My friend Nick is in the process of training Gunner to work birds, it's what these dogs love to do. Nick already has one great dog, Cooper, who he has trained and I'm looking forward to chronicling Gunner as he progresses. So for today I leave you with a couple of quick shots from my morning with Nick and his dogs, as well as a fun snapshot of Nick, his son, and Gunner. Something tells me those two are going to be long time pals!

Happy New Year everyone!

Ok, who stayed awake to watch the ball drop? I actually did this year, which was better than I did last year. I think for 2007 I was asleep by about 10:30 or so. Alright, with the new year comes new hopes, new dreams and new resolutions. Did you make any? Better yet, are you going to keep them? Yeah, me too....

I'd like to kick off the new year with a couple of quick shots from the close of 2007. I was again up in Boston, and this time I was meeting up with a photographer friend of mine from Houston who happened to be visiting New England. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to get out and do some shooting, I touched base with a couple of models I know up there and asked if they would mind braving the cold for a little while. Both Natalia and Eric were gracious enough to oblige. Thanks you, guys!

And my last image is one I took while photographing a great military couple who are back in NY visiting family. Malika and Peter reside in California where Peter is stationed with the US Marine Corps. As a fomer Marine myself, these military familes hold a special place in my heart for everything they do. The person who serves and the one who stays behind to take care of the home, family and everything else. It is truly a team effort. Thanks to all of you out there and a special thanks to Malika and Peter for giving me the opportunity to work with you.

Well folks, this will likely be it until 2008, especially given my update rate. Ok, I know, that needs to be on the New Years resolutions list.

As we close things out for the year here I just wanted to say a big "Thank You!" to all my clients and friends who have supported me throughout this past year. It's been a year of great change with the move back to New York, a switch over to Canon cameras and a whole lot of new clients who have become good friends. Folks like the Walton's whose sons are fighting overseas on our behalf, and their fourteen grandchildren who were just a blast to work with. And others like Carrie and Michael who will be spending their first Christmas and New Years as husband and wife, best of everything to you both.

It's also been a year of great loss as two members of my family, my Aunt Kathleen and my Uncle Tom, both passed away after long illnesses. Though they are gone the lessons they have taught me throughout my life will carry on. Thank you both for everything over the years.

And now 2008 is upon us, holding the promise of new and exciting challenges. I look forward to those challenges and all of the new friends they will bring into my life. As I try to do on most occasions I want to leave you with a picture. This one is of Arianna and Giovanni, two great kids that were part of a recent family session I did in New Jersey. The innocence of youth is a wonderful thing and particularly at this time of year when the long lines and the weather, and the crazy drivers can leave us short tempered, it is my sincere wish that we all take a few moments to try to see the world through the eyes of a child, with hope and amazement. Maybe if we did that more often the world would be a little better place.

A quick note on real estate photography

I have had a couple of conversations recently about the value of professional photography in the real estate and interior design industries. Obviously as a professional photographer it's easy for me to explain how I feel it can benefit both the designer or broker and the seller. Having the right equipment and skills necessary to produce a quality image is essential to having that image portray the subject in its best light. Okay, that was a bad pun, but you get my meaning.

Here's a link that I often refer people to who ask about the value of having a professional photographer come in on a real estate sales project. When I sold my house in Fort Worth it was my images that went on the sales site and brochure. I knew what time of day would produce the best lighting for the various rooms and features of the house. Sure it took more time than most agents will dedicate but the results were worth it. When comparing my home to ones similar it was clear to anyone who asked which had the most appeal. First impressions are very important! Especially when it can make the difference of several thousand dollars of commission. It's not cheap, but I am betting it is less expensive than another month or two in mortgage payments waiting on a buyer.

But don't take it from me, after all, I'm the photographer trying to convince you to go with me. Read what some others have to say about it.

Yesterday, on a spectacular autumn day here in the northeast, Carrie and Michael made their vows to each other and began their life together as man and wife. Yesterday started off about as any other day. You know, trying to get things caught up, wondering if that iPod of yours is really dead or if it can be salvaged. It's dead, but more on that later.

Meanwhile, you phone starts ringing. For some strange coincidence yesterday was the day that four of my old friends decided to call out of the blue. Now the conspiracy theorist in me started to nag, but what the heck, maybe it's just that time of year. After juggling some schedules and pushing some errands to the wayside I was able to meet up with one of those friends and tentatively block a lunch date with two others! So anyway, I drove over to Connecticut where I met up with one of the girls I used to work with a few years back. I caught up with Stacey and her daughter at the new farm where they are boarding their horse. Take a minute to reach out to your old friends, you'll be glad you did. Terry, Zita, Joe... Let's make it happen!

A big thanks to Stacey for allowing me to post a picture of her daughter Kristen. Kristen, good luck with Romeo and thanks for hanging in there for the impromptu picture session.

Now about that iPod... I can't believe it finally bit the dust. It has hung in there for over five years and countless drops and smashes in the suitcase, a battery change or two and now it's gone. So now the dilemma. New iPod or just jump to the iPhone? Do I want to lose my music or lose everything when I misplace it? Yes, I'm a Macintosh guy, I use Macs for all my photography work and it would be nice to finally have a phone that really does sync up with my address book and stuff. For years it's been a challenge to tweak some third party software to make everything play nice. But the price!!! Yeow! Maybe it can wait a bit....

Whew! It's almost Wednesday already!

The past few days have just flown on by. I have been working with the folks from the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (NJASID) during their 2007 Design Summit in Lambertville, NJ. What a great bunch of folks. As I have mentioned several times, I'm always looking for a great seminar or workshop to keep the learning going and that's exactly what these designers were doing also. Learning new and updated techniques and skills on how to better serve their clients. Summit attendees, I will have those photos available very shortly.

Sometimes, as the fly on the wall photographer you get to hear bits of some of these lectures, and let me tell you what, this was some good stuff! I learned so much! I learned that when it comes time for me to design that new home or studio, or even a remodel, I need to look for one of these folks. Just as I stress the importance of hiring a professional photographer when it comes time for those important events in your life, you should really think about consulting one of these folks if you are doing any design work in your home or business.

And as if all of that that wasn't enough, I got to spend a little time exploring Lambertville, NJ for the first time. I checked out the Lambertville House and then crossed over the Delaware River for a great tour and wine tasting at Crossing Vineyards .

I will get some images posted here as soon as I get a little rest, but all in all, not a bad way to spend a few busy days! Thanks again NJASID!

Playing some catch up around here with all sorts of things as autumn starts to roll in. After all, getting ready for winter in New York is a bit different than in Texas. I have to get hay for the horses, figure out how the heck I'm going to get them water in the middle of a snowstorm, etc. etc. That and about a thousand other little things that I had forgotten about when I moved away. Yeah, that's about enough about that...

Anyway, I'd like to say thanks to Kati. She's a young woman from the area who I met the other day and she agreed to sit for a few shots in the afternoon sun. Hopefully we'll get a chance to work together more very soon. Thanks Kati!

Well, that's about it for right now. I am looking forward to seeing the wonderful New England fall foliage as those leaves start to turn. Already you can see some tress starting and it won't be long until the hills are bursting with color!

Sorry for the month long lapse. Since I last updated I have been busy with a trip to Montana and another trip to New Orleans and Biloxi. As some of you know, one of the things I love about photography is that it is constantly changing and evolving. There are always new techniques to try and old ones to refine. With that in mind I recently attended a great workshop given by Mike Fulton of Tri Coast Photography. Mike is an incredible photographer and an excellent instructor. With Mike behind the podium we learned some new tricks about an old friend, flash photography. Using flash with with your camera can sometime be a bit of a challenge, no matter who you are. Well, Mike and his partner Cody are two of the best in the business when it comes to using flash so who better to learn from? And learn we did. As a matter of fact, we had a blast!

Another beautiful Sunday afternoon and I had a chance to get back out and catch up with Jaime, who runs the Pro Speed RC Raceway, and a bunch of RC racers. The were having their Onroad Mayhem II event and despite the heat, they had a great turnout and there was some great racing.

You really should swing by one day when they are running to see these cars in action. These aren't your average RC car. Many are powered by engines capable of over 20,000 rpm's running on a nitromethane fuel mixture that pushes these cars to incredible speeds. To the bystander it may look easy, but it's not, it can take years to learn to run some of these cars at the competitive level. These guys are serious about their sport. Getting their car set up for track conditions is like watching a miniaturized version of a NASCAR garage. Micrometers, scales, tachometers, tire truing devices are just part of the rolling garages these guys bring with them.

Ok, time to get things caught up around here. It has been a crazy past couple of weeks. First I had my mother and brother come out to visit and just about the time they pulled out of the driveway to head back to Iowa my niece showed up to spend a week here and visit New York city and take a look at a few colleges around the area.

I think I have visited New York city more in the past week than I have in the past five years! Throw in a couple of viewings of Phantom of the Opera and errant subway trip or two and there you have it!

Seriously though, there is nothing like having family come to visit. I have spent a great deal of my adult life traveling and not being located near much of my family so despite the occasional ruffled feathers, I really enjoy getting to see everyone, even if it's only for a few days. I miss you guys already....

I know, I know. A few of you kind folks have been letting me know I need to do a bit better job of updating here on the blog. In that spirit I will post a quick shot that I took while enjoying some relaxation this afternoon. I had seen these guys racing their RC cars quite a few times but hadn't had the opportunity to stop by. Well, today things worked out and I was able to spend a little time and meet some of the drivers that race their cars at Pro-Speed RC Raceway near Circleville.

Let me tell you, these little race cars are fast! I don't know how the drivers do it, especially when the car is coming towards them as all the steering is backwards! Yeah, it would be a disaster if I took the wheel. Clear out the kids!

Anyway, it was a lot of fun meeting some of the regulars today. I'll post a shot tonight and for those who had asked at the raceway, please check back in a day or so and I'll have a link to more. Great meeting you all today!

One of those special days...

Well folks, today I had the privilege to work with a a very special family. Mary and Ron Walton asked me to photograph them and their grandchildren.... all fourteen of them! It was a blast and these kids were great to work with. But that alone isn't what made it a special session. These kids are part of a family where three husbands/brothers are serving in the Army. All of these men have either been in Iraq or are slated to go there shortly. Whenever I get the opportunity to work with families like this it really makes me stop and think of the sacrifices that so many people are making so that I can do the things I love to do in a country as great as ours.

Having served in the Marine Corps I know how important it is to know that your family is safe at home, no matter where you have to go or what you have to do to make that happen. So I would like to take an extra moment on this holiday weekend to offer a big "THANK YOU!" to all of the men and women serving in our armed forces.

Wow, things have been non-stop here lately. Just trying to get settled in has been a challenge. Bills, drivers license, a bazillion magazine address changes... Not to mention the little matter of a house remodel in progress! The plan will include a nice shooting area for now and hopefully a complete studio down the road.

In the mean time I have be fortunate enough to touch base with a few local models and even managed to find the time to spend some camera time with one of them. Allow me to introduce Rose. She was a blast to work with and I think you will be seeing more of her in the future. Thanks again Rose!

Hopefully things will soon settle into some sort of groove around here. It's been tough leaving behind my Texas clients and friends. I will miss them all and I hope that they keep in touch. Perhaps our paths will cross again. I hope so, life is too short.

Well, the rains have stopped and the flood waters are starting to slowly recede. The Goshen/Florida, New York area was hit pretty hard and the fields are now lakes. Many of the locals are saying that this is the worst flood they have seen.

Same field a few days apart. Gray and rainy one day....

Well, as I am trying to get everything settled up here in NY I am finding that Mother Nature isn't going to be giving me much help. At least not in the near future. In the past couple of days we've had about five inches of rain and that has really made a mess of things. Sure, it could be worse, it could have been snow! The gurus say that it would have been like four or five feet of snow. Fun, fun, fun....

Anyway, I was doing some driving around today because cabin fever was setting in and thought I'd take a few quick shots to show you all what you are missing up here.

As I bounce back and forth between Texas and New York trying to get things lined up for the move I had a few spare minutes tonight and wanted to get a shot of the beautiful bluebonnets. Last year was pretty rough and we didn't see many, but this year they are just bursting out all over and it is really something.

I was able to coerce Bentley into sitting still and looking my way for a moment. He's a reluctant model, but he works pretty cheap!

Anyway... We had a nice time watching the sunset and enjoying the Texas bluebonnets.

Just a quick note on why things have been a bit behind here lately. I am in the process of relocating back to the New York area and that has really tied up my time. I hope you all will bear with me and once I get things up and running I promise to get back to regular updates. In the mean time, I am really excited about Cortney and Nance's wedding this weekend! The weather looks great and this western styled wedding promises to be a lot of fun!

Yes, I am still here. It has been a very crazy couple of weeks and I am finally starting to get things sorted out. I had some work that took me through Telluride, Chicago, and New York between Christmas and New Years. Then just as I was catching up we had that wild weather here in Texas. Who would have thought that we would get almost a week of 20-30 degree days along with a generous coating of ice!?

To top it off, I assisted a friend of mine who was shooting a wedding for a couple from Finland. This wonderful couple came to the United States to drive across the country and enjoy some time off. They decided to get married and they picked Coppell, Texas as the place to do it. According to them, it was one of the only places where they could find a Pastor who could do the ceremony in their native language. Well, long story short, they had their ceremony today in Texas where it was actually colder than it was in their hometown in Finland. Who would have thought that?

Anyway, a big congratulations to Tarja and Arto as they begin their life together as man and wife while they continue their journey across the States. Best Wishes!!

Looking ahead there are some exciting things coming up. I have another trip to New York planned and Cortney and Nance's wedding is sneaking up on us also!

Well, that's a bit if a catch up. Maybe I'll make a late resolution to keep this blog up to date.....

As I had mentioned, it was going to be a busy weekend and it turned out to be about as expected. Here are a few images from some of the different events and sessions.

First off... Friday Night lights!

The Coppell Cowboys faced the Colleyville Heritage Panthers at Texas Stadium. Colleyville Heritage would go on to win this game 52-20. A tough end of the season for Coppell.

Then I had a great portrait session on Saturday morning with Catherine and her mother, Angela.

Later Saturday evening I went over to visit my friends at Vetro Art Glass in Grapevine. You probably have seen some other posts with pictures from my visits with these guys. Well, on Saturday they had their annual "Truth or Consequences" auction. It's quite an event and I would recommend it to anyone! People won some great pieces of art just for knowing some art glass trivia.

And for those pieces that the selected person didn't know the answer, it went up for auction. If the reserve price wasn't met, well....

As they say in the UK....It was a smashing good time!

Well folks, since I had a few spare moments I thought I'd take a minute and remind everyone that it's still not to late to get those last minute custom Christmas cards made! Now, with that out of the way. There are lots of fun projects coming up. Family portraits, high school play-off football at Texas Stadium, and several corporate sessions and of course, another seminar. I just love going to these learning sessions. This one is about some advanced lighting techniques that are used in wedding photography. With wedding season fast approaching it's time to brush up on the challenges surrounding shooting these events.

Another busy day....

When it rains, it pours! Did you know that is the slogan for Morton Salt? Just a piece of trivia from my History Channel television watching...

Yesterday was a pretty busy day and I pretty much criss-crossed the metroplex to take care of everything, but I was able to manage to get all the items on my to-do list checked off. The best part of the day was my last client, Tom. Tom had contacted me about doing some casual portraits because it had been quite some time since he had had any done of himself and thought maybe it was time to get one. Naturally I agreed, but not just because it's what I do, but because time flies so fast that we sometimes look up and realize we're five or ten years down the road, our family has grown and maybe someone has moved out of the area. Maybe it's our children away at school or our new job transfers us. Having pictures of your family together with you, be it at school or in your new house will certainly help make it your "home" much quicker. There's something about seeing your loved ones daily that just makes everything better.

Take the opportunity of the holidays, when your family gathers, to have a portrait done. They really don't take that long and the memory that it creates will last a lifetime.

Friday Night Lights!

The cooler temperatures are here and that really makes it feel like football weather! Last night I was in Coppell to help out a friend who among other things, shoots for the Coppell High School Cowboys. Tom is a great guy so when he asked if I could help out, I was more than happy to do so.

It was Senior Night, a night where they honor the athletes who are seniors and whose days of high school athletics, especially football, are winding down. It was really nice to see all the parents out on the field to take a moment with their young man or young woman who has been participating in athletics, or band, or drill team.

And then, it was time for football!

Coppell was hosting the Flower Mound Jaguars and it was quite a battle. The Jaguars jumped out to an early lead and by halftime things weren't looking to well for the Cowboys. But after halftime, and I'm sure a spirited lecture by the Coach, the Cowboys came out fighting. For a while it looked as though the Cowboys would overcome the deficit and although they narrowed the margin, they couldn't pull out the win tonight. They still have an opportunity for the post season and I hope that if they go on, that I will get a chance to join Tom and follow their progress.

All in all it was a lot of fun and seeing the good sportsmanship that both teams displayed was really something. Best of luck to both teams as they near the end of their schedules!

Yes, I know I have been slipping a bit on the blog end of things. It's been a crazy week! My apologies....

As I have said before, I think that education is very important no matter what you do and photography is certainly no different. Today was another one of those times where I had a chance to attend a local seminar by a respected photographer, Don Barnes. We had a great time watching Don demonstrate various techniques and work in his studio, It certainly gave me some great inspiration! He has some one of a kind equipment that he has built and seeing it in action was great. Don, thanks so much for sharing your time and knowledge. It is such a pleasure to work with photographers who are willing to teach others from their experience.

Additionally we had a chance to meet a few of Don's clients and even take a few shots ourselves. I'd like to say thanks to all of those folks for sharing their time today and especially to Dianne and her daughter, Jenny, who were kind enough to let me post their picture to the blog. Jenny had just had her senior pictures taken and she was such a natural that Don asked her if she would mind coming back to help out as a model for the seminar. Once things started rolling, we asked Dianne if she would mind jumping in for a few and she did just great also. What a team!

I went out to Albuquerque last weekend to meet my family and attend the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta . Although the weather limited some of the events, we still had a great time!

Along with watching the balloons we traveled up to the top of Sandia Peak on the worlds longest tramway. What a view! And if the view from the tram or the top isn't enough for you, just look at the picture I took of one of their maintenance workers riding on top of the tram car! They do daily maintenance on the towers and cables and these folks are up there every day, no matter the weather!

I was also able to take a bit of time to photograph a fantastic young woman, Krysta. This is just one quick shot from the session and there are so many more wonderful images to go through it's going to be tough to pick a favorite. Thanks Krysta!

Deborah and Alan

It was another crazy week, but this time for a bit of a different reason. My best friend, Alan, got married over the weekend and I had the honor of being the best man. It was a beautiful day on Saturday when Deborah and Alan exchanged vows near Cedar Creek Lake. I am so happy for them both!

I only took a few quick shots of the couple because of my duties as Best Man, but I certainly wanted to have one for the blog!

Hello folks,

Here are a couple shots from over the weekend. On Friday I was in Coppell at the Coppell High School Cowboys vs. Lewisville High School football game. I was helping out a friend who usually covers the Cowboys games but Tom was out of town so I jumped in and lent a hand. It was their homecoming and it was a fun night for all. The Lariettes had a special halftime show that included their fathers in a special dance routine that brought huge cheers form everyone. And of course, the crowing of the Homecoming Queen was a special moment that won't soon be forgotten. Tom will be posting images from all of the others that were helping cover that game shortly. Then on Saturday I spent a few hours at the ranch where I board my horse, taking some shots of folks participating in the playday that was being held. It was a little hot, but I think everyone still had a great time working with their horses. Art Glass

Yesterday I did some work on a project with my friend David Gappa from Vetro Art Glass. I had done some shooting at David's studio a while back and now I am working with him to document a few of their larger custom installations. The one below is in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders located in Fort Worth. It is a beautiful piece that is nearly six feet in height. This is just one of the shots I tried, there are many more that I need to go through. Shooting pieces like this is very challenging because the glass is so reflective that it is difficult to eliminate the glare. While you need a little to help showcase the "life" in the piece, too much is just not good.

Sorry it's been a while folks...

There has been just sooo much going on that I have been slipping on the updates. My apologies...

Let's see, since I last updated there has been quite a few fun events: a triathlon, a 10K/20K race, a student vs. alumni rugby match at the University of Dallas during their 50th year celebration, a quick shot of the Sweet Hearts of the Rodeo in Fort Worth (Those ladies were a blast!) and even a trip to the
Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. Sometimes you need to stop and smell the roses and you can certainly find some there!

Just a week ago I was visiting New York and seeing some old friends. As I snapped a picture of a changed skyline my heart was heavy with the thoughts of how the world has changed since that fateful day five years ago.

I hope that everyone takes a moment today to remember all those that perished in the attacks and their families who were left behind. Additionally, my thoughts turn to the men and women both here and abroad who are out there putting their lives on the line to help keep us safe. From the military members and emergency personnel, to the people behind the scenes that often go unmentioned, thank you all for your sacrifices that allow us to continue to live free in this great country.

Surreal Landscape

Well, I was playing around with my infrared converted camera a bit during this trip to NY. Infrared film has been around for quite some time as has infrared filters for film and digital cameras. These filters allow for some interesting effects but they are kind of tough to use. Enter the converted digital camera. Long story short, on some cameras you can do some "surgery" that allows you to take pictures of the infrared light spectrum. "Why?" you ask. Well, because you can I guess is the best answer. No, really you can get some neat effects and the huge bonus digital conversion gives you is the ability to handhold the camera and shoot more of less normally. Using filters it is next to impossible to do this.

Anyway, I'm beginning the journey to use my new camera effectively. Like any new piece of equipment it takes some use to get the hang of it. Here's a quick shot from today's attempt. Nothing special, but it was a lot of fun!

A wet weekend!

Well, the NY area got some of the remnants of Ernesto so it was a rainy weekend. And when it wasn't rainy it was cloudy and gray. I was still able to get most of my projects completed and still found a few minutes to swing by some of the places I remembered from when I lived in the NY area. Before I get into that, I first want to say a big thanks and congratulations to Cortney and Nance who have announced their wedding plans for next year and have asked me to be their photographer. Thank you both, I am really looking forward to working with you on your special day!!

One of the places I used to like to visit was a place called The Ranch It is always a good time to swing by there and watch the skydivers jump from their aircraft and float to the ground and today was no different. I've thought about doing it, but after years of watching guys jump from the back of KC-130's when I was in the Marine Corps, I think I'm better off just watching!

Anyway, these guys were busy today! They had two of their Twin Otter aircraft shuttling jumpers up to 13,000 feet and then diving toward the ground for a landing to get ready to do it again. These aircraft are pretty impressive. Very powerful for their weight they jump right off the ground and get these jumpers into position in no time.

New York, NY

Where has the summer gone? It's almost September already! Well, I am in New York at the moment, mixing business and pleasure. I just love when that happens! Yesterday (it’s today now here in NY) I was able to meet up with several old friends from when I lived in New York. It’s always a blast to see where our roads have taken us. One of my dear friends, Dora, has just retired after over 50 years of service with General Electric. Dora helped me out of more than one jam when I worked with her and I was very happy to have been able to see her on her last day with the company. Dora, thank you so much!

Last weekend I was able to attend a workshop given by one of DFW's, if not the country's, preeminent portrait photographers, Fran Reisner. As with any profession, ongoing training is vital for so many reasons. Whether it is to learn a new technique, networking, or just to get some fresh ideas, going to a workshop can really be rewarding. In this case it was fantastic! Fran shared with us not only her techniques and practices, but also her philosophy behind what goes into her work that makes it so incredible and in demand. It was a great experience with a fun group of folks and I look forward to adapting much of what Fran taught us for my clients so that I may provide them even more value. Thanks Fran!

I have a trip to New York next week and I am really looking forward to getting back up there to see some old friends. It has certainly been a while. Where does the time go?

Speaking of friends... I was having lunch with my friend Alan and out of the blue in walks an old buddy of ours from the Marine Corps days! It had been probably eight or nine years at least since we has seen Chris, but some things never change.... We picked right up where we had left off and found that Chris will be moving to Texas shortly. Small world....

One hot weekend!

Wow.... It was 100+ both Saturday and Sunday here in Fort Worth. Add to that some dragboats capable of doing 200+ MPH and you really come to understand the word "HOT!"

There were a few times when I was grumbling about the heat, but then I would take a break and hit the lemonade concession and that would help take the edge off. I really felt bad for those racers in their protective gear. That must have been a very uncomfortable wait for their turn at the starting line. Here's a few more from today's races. I will post a link to the complete series in a day or two so please check back.

For those teams that were nice enough to give me a lift with my gear back and forth, you know who you are...THANK YOU!!!

Another session with Rachel...

Tonight (last night since it's now early morning) I spent a little time in the studio with a great model with whom I worked with a few months ago. Rachel is just great to work with and after just briefly going through some of the shots of the session I thought I would put a couple up here that caught my eye.

We're already talking about plans for some future shoots including one that will show off her new car! We just have to get her to slow down long enough to catch her now!

Speaking of things going fast. We are already into August and with school getting ready to get back in session, now is the time to start thinking about those senior portraits. Rut-bustin' with water, milk, and......

Sometimes when you are in a rut you need to try something a little different. I have always been intrigued by these type of shots so I thought I'd give it a whirl. I'm sure I will give it another go sometime because it has a lot of potential for days that it is just too darn hot outside to want to do anything.

All I can say is this. Thank goodness for digital. I would never have tried this with film! Just to get this one took me about 75 exposures.... It was a fun experiement though!!

Sorry I haven't updated here lately. It always seems that just about the time you think you are getting all the little things nailed down something else pops up.

Anyway...

I have a couple of shots from over the weekend where I had the chance to attend the
Mesquite Championship Rodeo

It was a lot of fun and since I was there for relaxation I only took a few pictures. Well, more than a few really...

Here's a couple from the rodeo. The first is the Bull Poker game. The cowboys sit and when the bull charges, the last one to stand wins the money. Tough way to make a buck!

The second is a quick shot of a barrel racer. She would go on to win the event that evening.

Dell-Winston School Solar Car Challenge

I had the opportunity today to go out to Texas Motor Speedway and see teams from all over, including internationally, compete in the first day of the Dell-Winston School Solar Car Challenge. We certainly had plenty of sun for them!

These kids build these cars and then they compete against the other teams. One of the main points is to see who can go the furthest in the alloted time. Sounds like the fastest would always be the winner, but that isn't always the case. If your car doesn't hold together and you fail to finish the time, you don't get credit for your distance. Kind of like the old tortise and the hare story.....

I had the opportunity to shoot the Disco Sprint Triathlon today. What a blast! Is was organized by the Dallas Athletes Athletic Club and they had a great turnout. I am always impressed watching these athletes compete and there was fun for every level of competitor. Nice job to everyone!!!

See, I finally did get out from behnd the keyboard and get back behind the camera! It was a busy weekend to be sure. I need to get some sleep shortly but here's a quick one from the triathlon today. It was the Texas Woman Sprint Triathlon and it was held at Lake Ray Roberts just north of Denton. You couldn't have asked for a better morning for it. The weather was beautiful and the event went exactly as planned.

I have really been slacking off here lately! I am about to be swamped this weekend, but in a good way. I have a bunch of things lined up and am looking forward to a fun filled weekend of shooting. Everything from portraits, to bull riding, to a triathlon! I have spent the last couple of weeks trying to catch up on things that I have been putting off. I finished a couple of wedding albums and spent a few days weeding out some of my images that needed to be trashed. I'm such a pack-rat when it comes to keeping things, but these had to go!

I also spent a little more time out at the barn with the horses. Here's a shot from tonight of one of the girls from the barn showing off on my horse Bucky. Thanks Hannah! She makes it look easy... I'd be on my back in the dirt!

Childress

The past few days I had the opportunity to shoot with a gifted photographer named Russell Graves up near his home in Childress, Texas. Russell is a well known photographer and writer who specializes in Texas wildlife and when I was given the opportunity to shoot with him I jumped at the chance!

Russell is an amazing guy, not only for his accomplishements as a photographer, but he is also an Agriscience teacher at the Chidress High School. His students are frequent champions on both the state and national level in Future Farmers of America competitions. Russell's teaching career is also highlighted by the many awards that he has been honored with as a result of his hard work and dedication. Everywhere we went we bumped into students or former students who were glad to take a minute to say hi.

It didn't take me long to find out why the students enjoyed learning from Russell. As we shot our way through the weekend, Russell was always willing to share his knowledge and insight. It's sometimes a bit daunting to work with someone who is an expert in their respective field, but with Russell it was different. He'll put you at ease within minutes and from there it's just a matter of seeing how many great images you can capture. We saw everything from wild hogs, to turkeys, snakes and even a porcupine! Talk about your school field trips! Thanks again Russell to both you and Kristy for your exceptional hospitality. I hope we get a chance to shoot together again soon.

What an exciting visit and chance for me to try my hand at another facet of photography. I even managed to get a few "keepers" of my own, I hope you like them.

Molten glass...

Well tonight turned out to be a real treat. For several months I have been going past the glass-blowing studio VETRO in Grapevine but I always seemed to catch them on a Monday, which is when they are closed (at least right now). Anyway, a couple of weeks ago I stopped by and talked with Shannon in the sales area and asked if I could possibly come by and watch them work and maybe take a few pictures. Since they are already set-up for spectators and even offer classes Shannon said that it should be no problem. I went up to the studio tonight and met with David (co-owner) and Scott (one of the apprentice glassblowers) and spent some time watching these guys transform molten glass into beautiful shapes. Along the way, I also learned some interesting facts about glass-blowing. I recommend to anyone who appreciates artistry to stop by and check out their gallery and watch them work.

Hump Day! Halfway through the week!

I had some free time today as I was waiting for a call from the cable company to do a repair, you would think they could give you some kind of estimate when they will show up, right? Anyway, since I couldn't be too far from the house and it was the last day home game for the Fort Worth Cats I thought it would be fun to go down to LaGrave Field and watch them take on the Pensacola Pelicans. I had a great time. Nothing quite like watching baseball and eating a hot-dog on a beautiful afternoon to help erase some of those cares away. Of course, wouldn't you know it, about halfway through the game my phone rings and it's the cable folks telling me they are going to be at my house soon. Sooo, I wrapped things up and headed home, but not before I snagged a couple of shots of the hometown team on their way to a win over Pensacola.

Memorial Day weekend

I hope everyone had as much fun this weekend as I did. I met a bunch of new friends and had the opportunity to do some exciting shooting. Thanks to Mike for taking me on a little "urban exploring". You would be amazed at what you can find right in your own town!

Then on Sunday I went to Granbury where I had the opportunity to shoot the Junior Meeks Memorial Bull Bash. It was a perfect day for the event and watching those young cowboys ride those bulls was a lot of fun. Some of those young bullriders have a lot of talent and it will be exciting to watch as they progress in the sport!

Extreme Airshow Challenge...

This touring competition came to Denton over the weekend and I was able to get up there today. It was great to see these guys tumbling their aircraft across the blue Texas sky! There was a little bit of wind but these guys went at it regardless. It's pretty amazing what they can do with these aircraft....

Budweiser Clydesdales

What a day! As I was passing through Grapevine on Tuesday I happened to see the Budweiser Clydesdale team setting up and getting ready for their appearance at the Grapevine Main Street Days festival. I stopped by and talked with a couple of the team members and asked the team leader, Andrew, if I could come by and watch as they readied the horses for the parade. They were very happy to oblige and so Wednesday morning I went over and watched them go through all of the pre-event work. It's the things that most folks don't ever consider when they see this beautiful sight go by. Oh, and by the way, I learned it is correctly called a "hitch". An "Eight-Horse Hitch" to be more precise. Seeing these animals up close was truly amazing. One of these guys weighs over three times what my quarter horse does!

After about three hours of washing and grooming, braiding and harnessing, they left for the parade amidst the sounds of the Budweiser jingle and thirty-two hooves marching rhythmically down the road.... It is always an impressive sight! If you have the chance to see them up close, I highly recommend it! This particular hitch is out of San Antonio and they stay very busy, averaging about 10 months on the road every year.
